Adblock Plus is a comprehensive Firefox tool that allows you to block ads that appear on web pages. As it is an add-on, it's a small, discreet program that sits in the top right corner of your navigation bar. Clicking on the red icon will bring up a list of the blockable items on the page, while a drop-down list reveals more features and configuration options.

In order for Adblock Plus to work correctly, you will need to sign up to a filter list. There are extensive instructions for picking the right one on the program's website, so you needn't worry too much about this aspect. If you would prefer not to sign up to a list, you can individually block ads of your choosing. Once selected with Adblock Plus, the ad in question won't appear again.

Adblock Plus works by identifying the advertising on a web page and completely preventing it from appearing. There is a risk that it could accidentally block something that is not actually advertising, although in my short test this didn't happen. Even if it does, the website provides information about what to do - in fact, the Adblock Plus website provides detailed information on just about every aspect of the program. Viewing the internet with no ads is a very strange experience - you might even find yourself thinking that some of your favorite pages are looking a little empty!
